Description
A close fitting cowl, generous in length and worked in stranded colour work, provides significant protection from the cold and wind on winter days. This project is ideal for those new to colour work wanting to explore a range of colour work techniques.
Michalina is named for Michalina Janoszanka (1889–1952), a polish artist who created extraordinary works on glass. This cowl was specifically inspired by her work “Winter” c.1925 (The National Museum in Krakow MNK IV-Mal-325).

Skills covered
- Working corrugated rib.
- Understanding the different technical requirements used to complete different styles of stranded colour work:
- Tensioning
- Securing yarns to ensure sensible float lengths in patterns with long runs of colour.
- Three ways to work colourwork (yarns in both hands, yarns in your right-hand, yarns in your left-hand).
- Dealing with yarn ends.

Materials
- For a result similar to the model, choose five colour of Vintage Purls Tannahill yarn.
I recommend: -
-
- One dark shade. Colour A. Requires 40g.
All your other colours should contrast well against this. - Two shades of a colour (e.g. two blues, one darker than the other). Colours B & C. Requires
15g of each. - One pale colour. Colour D. Requires 20g.
- One bright “pop” colour. Colour E. Requires 10g.
Tannahill is a pure merino, woollen spun yarn. It is 4ply/fingering weight (100g/396m).
- One dark shade. Colour A. Requires 40g.
-
- 3.50mm needles or size that gives you gauge.
I used a 40cm long circular needle throughout but double point needles are an altenative option. - Optional: 5.00mm needle (or needle tip). This is for the cast off only. Close enough is good enough, pick a needle
3 – 5 sizes larger than your main needle to ensure your cast off is not too tight. - A stitch marker.
Gauge
27 stitches and 30 rows in 10cm in blocked stranded colour work.
Size
54cm circumference. Modification advice is included in the pattern.
